What is the difference between marinara sauce, spaghetti sauce, and arrabbiata sauce?

All three of these sauces are derived from tomato. Think of marinara sauce as the base. From there you can create a spaghetti sauce, or tomato sauce, which typically cooks for a few hours to get a richer and deeper flavor. An arrabbiata sauce is a spicy marinara sauce that has added chili peppers or chili flakes in it.

    🥘 Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons canola oil
    • ½ cup julienned red onion, about half a medium onion
    • ½ teaspoon basil
    • ½ teaspoon oregano
    • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomato
    • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
    • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    • 1 ½ teaspoon kosher salt
    • ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper

    🔪 Instructions

    1. In a saucepan, add oil, onion, basil, and oregano. Cook onion until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
    2. Add tomato, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir.
    3. Simmer for 10 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning to taste. Stir.
    4. Simmer for another 10 minutes. Serve immediately.

    💭 Helpful Hints

    • use honey instead of granulated sugar.
