Published: May 8, 2020 · by Joe Morales

Learn how to make homemade coconut milk from dried coconut. DIY coconut milk is one of the easiest and quickest things to make and I made my own coconut milk in no time at all. Packed with tropical flavors, this will quickly become one of your favorite ingredients to use in dishes.

This recipe will yield a little over 2 cups after all is said and done. I didn't have any canned coconut milk in the house but I have some sweetened coconut. Making coconut milk, or any nut milk is so easy and so much better than any store bought product. In some ways, this is similar to how you make almond milk.

    ❓What is coconut milk

Coconut milk and coconut cream are basically the same product, just different ratios of shredded coconut to water and cook time. Coconut water is actually the clear liquid inside fresh coconut and is very high in potassium.

    🍽 Equipment

    • You'll only need a few items for this homemade coconut milk recipe.
    • a blender or a food processor
    • a fine mesh strainer
    • milk bag
    • medium bowl
    • storage container

    🥘 Ingredients

    • 2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
    • 2 cups water, boiling

    🔪 Instructions

There really isn't any prep time to this recipe other than measuring out ingredients and heating the water.

    1. Bring water to a boil in a medium saucepan. I have an electric teapot so I just heated the water in that.
    2. Place coconut and water in the blender and blend for a good minute or two until liquid is milk-like.
    3. Place the linen napkin in the strainer over a bowl.
    4. Pour the liquid onto the napkin and strainer. Allow to cool and drip into the bowl.
    5. Once the milk has cooled enough to handle, carefully lift the four corners of the napkin and begin squeezing the liquid out.
    6. When most of the liquid has been squeezed out, begin twisting the napkin around the pup from the coconut meat. This will force any remaining milk to drain out.
    7. Discard the pulp.
    8. Use your fresh coconut milk in your recipe and enjoy!
