Using a kitchen hack for my blueberry muffins

Published: Aug 30, 2019 · by Joe Morales

This post is all about blueberry muffins. Not the beautiful kind you expect to see on a food website, but the ugly side of it. Just so you know, it’s not all fun and games in the kitchen. Well, I mean, it is. BUT what I mean to say is that things don’t always come out the way you plan (or hoped they would).

I do a lot of research and development and sometimes, shit just doesn’t come out so well. Take my Blueberry Muffins for example.

We had some blueberries that were reaching the end of their shelf life so I thought the best way to put them to work was making blueberry muffins...then I realized I didn’t have a muffin tin. I did but now I have no clue what happened to it...

canning ring and cupcake papers

I mean really. What kind of chef doesn’t have a muffin tin? My non-cooking friend has two. TWO!

I did just so happen to have the cupcake/muffin papers so I did some research. Turns out there is a “kitchen hack” to where you can use the papers and place them into canning lid rings. hmmm...Okay. I see what you’re putting down. I’ll give it a go because I REALLY want these muffins.

Muffin making

So on to the muffins. I have a great recipe and I’ve made them before so this was going to be easy. Or so I thought.

I prepped all the ingredients and had them ready to go. At this point all I needed to do was place the papers and the canning rings onto my sheet tray.

In the oven they go! I am so excited about these muffins. You have no idea. I even have the butter out so it’s nice and soft for when I schmeer it on the slightly warm muffins!

After the alloted baking time, I check the muffins and notice something’s wrong. They aren’t rising. They did however grow out but not up. Not the way it was supposed to go at all. I was a little miffed so I thought maybe they just need to go a little longer...which is why they are a bit more darker than they normally would be. BUT...no. These guys were not going to make it.

The blueberry muffins

Don’t get me wrong. They taste great. They are just flat. FLAT and round.

It was at this point I decided the paper in the ring hack sucked and it wasn’t going to work for these muffins. What the hell was I going to do with all this batter? I looked around and the only thing I came up with was a bread loaf pan. Hmm. Ok. I’ll give it a shot.

So, you want to know what happened? Well, let me tell you this recipe isn’t good for the kitchen hack, and it clearly wasn’t good for the loaf pan either.

Let me just say, as you’re laughing your butts off, that everything tasted great. They looked horrible and there was clearly something wrong. I’m going back to the drawing board and I’m going to redeem myself.

Oh, and if you’re wondering...I still haven’t picked up a muffin pan. I came so close the other day but I bought a new set of pots and pans instead. So much better if you ask me!

Don’t judge. Dammit Jim, I'm a savory chef not a pastry chef!
