As some of you may know, I started culinary school back in October 2015. I was given a list of items we needed to purchase prior to the first day of class. It was a back-to-school shopping day for me; which hasn’t happened for, well, let’s just say a few years…
On the list were the required uniform items: white t-shirt, black socks and all-black nonslip shoes. I got the usual white t-shirts and black socks but as I was shopping for my shoes I had flashbacks of these days of yesteryear when I had to get shoes for gym class. You know the ones, those non-marking white soled shoes.
Introducing FILA®and their nonslip shoes
After shopping around, I settled on the FILA® Memory Worksheet Walking Shoe over at Kohl’s. They were pretty comfortable and the memory foam was awesome on the feet! These shoes ended up lasting me 9 months. They probably would have lasted a bit longer had I not been doing double duty with them. I mean, how many work shoes out there can last 9 months in a high traffic kitchen? I was using them for school and I was using them for work; which at the time was 50-60 hours per week, again, 9 months straight. The only issue I had with them were the shoestrings. They snapped in half about 6 months in and I needed to replace them. Eventually though, they died. They went down in a blaze of glory though. I would show you the photos of them but they’re too horrific.
Because I knew the shoes were on their way out, I was doing some research on what type of shoe I wanted next. While I liked the FILA® shoe, I wanted a shoe that had no stitching and no laces; basically, I wanted a clog or slip on shoe that was easily cleaned. Once food landed on the FILA®, it was difficult to keep clean.
Enter Dansko, Nonslip shoes
I decided that my next shoe was going to be a slip on type shoe with no laces and as little to no stitching for easy cleanup. This lead me to Dansko. They’re pretty popular and have a great reputation for being durable. We were in the mall one killing time between school and work. I know, the mall. Ugh, but sometimes you can’t avoid it! I went into The Walking Company and found the shoe I have been researching. Next to the Wynn was the Dansko XP Clog. I tried both on but I didn’t like the way you wear clogs. You’re supposed to have a space the size of your pinky fit between the back of the shoe and the heel of your foot. It makes a shuffling/clunking sound when you walk and I didn’t care for that.
When I tried on the Wynn though, it felt comfortable and it felt more like a shoe whereas the clog didn’t. I’ve been wearing the Wynn for a month now and I have to say they are pretty good. I like the way they clean up when (or if) I spill something on them. Since I’m on my feet quite a bit, they could use a little more cushioning. I am thinking of adding some shoe inserts but haven’t done any research on those (yet).
All-in-all, I’m pretty satisfied with my new shoes and will see how long they can hold up in the active school/work environment. Plus, I think they are kinda sexy. Weird huh?
